Mail server check
Is this tool useful?
The ports we test
- 993 IMAP over SSL/TLS and 143 IMAP with STARTTLS: reading mail.
- 465 SMTP over SSL/TLS and 587 SMTP with STARTTLS: sending from a mail app.
- 25 SMTP between servers: how other servers deliver mail to you.
- 995 POP3 over SSL/TLS and 110 POP3 with STARTTLS: downloading mail.
Reading the results
A port that refuses or doesn’t answer within 8 seconds is closed or filtered by a firewall. A plain port (143, 587, 110) that answers without offering STARTTLS would let passwords travel unencrypted. “Login only after TLS” means the server refuses passwords until the connection is encrypted, which is what you want. The login methods (PLAIN, LOGIN, XOAUTH2…) are what the server announces; OAuth-only methods mean the provider wants its own sign-in rather than a password.
About port 25
Many networks block outgoing connections to port 25 to stop spam, so a timeout there is common and says little about your server. Whether other servers can deliver to you depends on your MX records, which the email DNS check shows.
